I did and it nearly cost me my life. 

As I opened my eyes in the hospital for the fourth time due to fatal alcohol poisoning, I felt shattered. I was stunned that my untreated postpartum depression and alcohol use disorder landed me in danger. I had worked hard to create the life I'd always dreamed of, yet I felt trapped and desperate to escape.

It all started when I moved from my ambitious city career to being a military spouse in the suburbs, with two young children and two jobs at a maximum-security prison. My physical and emotional health deteriorated, and I drank wine to relieve stress. But, even as a professional in addiction recovery, I failed to recognize the signs of my increasing alcohol consumption.

The shame and depression were overwhelming, and anxiety grew as I worried about my secret life crashing into reality. I told myself there was no reason to stop drinking, as nothing terrible had happened. I went through cycles of overindulging and then strictly moderating my alcohol intake.

Before I knew it, I hid alcohol in anything I could find - coffee mugs, water bottles, tumblers, YETI cups. My life became exhausting, always searching for ways to conceal my addiction. But I soon realized that while I could hide the bottles and cans, I could never hide my behavior.

My dependence on alcohol and the problems it caused continued to grow. I missed bedtime stories, called in sick to work, and blacked out without remembering to tuck my children into bed. But even after all that, I kept drinking. The thought of no longer having alcohol as my primary coping tool terrified me. I felt trapped, wondering why this had to be my thing, why I couldn't just have a normal relationship with alcohol like others.

One day, a haunting vision of my future self appeared before me. I didn't recognize her then, but she was an accomplished and caring mother of two - the same age as my children. Unfortunately, she was driving with her kids in the car under the influence. My heart sank as I learned that the worst had happened - the children did not survive the accident.

Regardless of education, success, or strength, alcohol can lure even the most accomplished and empowered women down a destructive path. As someone who has experienced this firsthand, I know that addiction can affect anyone. 

But your story doesn't have to be like mine. You don't have to lose everything before you realize you need to stop. For several years, I struggled with getting sober on my own without any success. I was left empty-handed despite my attempts to find support within my community and through online resources. Consequently, I developed a solution I wished I had when seeking help. On November 24th, 2016, I woke up with a hangover for the last time.

You will realize that sometimes the best relationship with alcohol is no relationship. You’ll overcome decision fatigue and silence the mental tug-of-war by eliminating alcohol and making sobriety an essential part of your life.
